Spring Equinox: Simple Ways to Celebrate

In my last blog post, I talked about the various associations and correspondences with the Spring Equinox. Today, I’m discussing various simple ways you can celebrate the wonderful day! All of these are great ways to celebrate by yourself, or with friends and family!

The Spring Equinox is associated with the East. Waking up early and watching the sun rise in the east and greeting the Sun is a perfect way to celebrate this day! Breathe deep, take it in, maybe say out loud what you are hopeful for, what new opportunities you’re hoping for. Want to take it a step further? Do a morning yoga or meditation session!

Spring Cleaning

I know, I know, this doesn’t sound like a celebration! But….hear me out. Cleaning the house is not my favorite past time, however, spring cleaning is something different. When you spring clean, it’s like your purging all the stale old energy out of your home! Turn on some lively music, get rid of the clutter, clean out those corners and closets! Time to make those Keep, Sell, and Donate piles. My Nana used to say “a cluttered home equals a cluttered mind”…or was it “a messy house means a messy life”? I don’t know, it was something like that, but you get the gist! This is the dawning of a new season, get rid of all that old stuff and make some room for the new! Clean the floors, the counters, the cupboards, behind and underneath the furniture…anywhere stale energy (and dust) can linger. Clean with intention. (there’s the magic part of this cleaning session!) Wanna kick it up a notch? I like to use Herbal Vinegars to clean with, but they take at least one month to infuse so if you don’t already have them….there’s just no time. That does not mean hope is lost! There are plenty of natural plant based cleaning products available these days at your local grocery stores! I will include links to my favorite products at the end of this blog. Adding a fresh spring scent while doing your spring cleaning just, like, puts the icing on the cake, you know? If you have carpet, a fresh scented carpet powder is easy to make and really freshens up your carpet!

  • Mason Jar
  • 1 cup Baking Soda
  • 5 drops Essential Oil (for spring try: Lemongrass, Lavender, Rosemary, or Lemon)
  • Sprinkle into your carpet, let sit for 15-20 minutes and then vacuum.
  • Caution: if you have animals, please research safety of essentials oils and your pets

Color Eggs or Create a Positive Plastic Egg DIY

Eggs are a symbol of fertility and are a part of several cultural and religious practices at this time of year. Let’s get the “Balance an Egg on the Equinox” myth out of the way first. This is an old wives tale. Yes you can balance an egg on the equinox….or any other day of the year. Couple the symbolic Egg with the Bright Colors of Spring and it’s a win win!!! I personally love hard boiled eggs, but if they are not your thing, no problem! Grab a bunch of brightly colored plastic eggs and some bright colored paper. Cut the paper in strips and write everything you want to manifest, your hopes and dreams for the future. Put them in the eggs to fertilize and grow. After the equinox, tuck them away in a safe place in your home, to open next Equinox! I put links at the bottom of this blog to help put this project together!

Plant Seeds

This is by far my favorite practice at the Spring Equinox!!! I have been doing this since I took my very first baby steps on this witchy path! Grab some seeds, soil and small planter or seed started pod. Next get yourself some bay leaves. Write on the bay leaves the things you want to manifest in your life. Next, plant both the seeds and the bay leaves into your soil. As you water and tend to your seeds and grow your plant…you will also be growing your hopes and dreams! Now….when I talk about the magic involved here, I am talking about practical magic. You cannot just wish things into existence. Magic takes intention and action. You want your dreams to come true? Work on them!!! Watering and tending to your plants, works as a reminder to also water and tend to your dream life! Check the links below to purchase items for this project.

Spend time in Nature

Take a Hike, or just go for a walk outside. Sit by the lake or river. Go to the park. Simply….go outside!!! Take in the sights, smells and sounds of Spring! Connect with the nature that is all around you. Notice the changes to the Earth. RESPONSIBLY pick some wild flowers, with gratitude, thanking the Earth for that gift. Bringing them into your home, is literally bringing the Spring Equinox into your home! Want to take it a step further? Try some yoga or meditate. Meditating near moving water is a great Spring Equinox practice. Close your eyes and focus on the sound of the water. Imagine it washing away all the things in your life that no longer serves you, making room for all the good things that you’ve planted with your seeds!

Create a Spring Equinox Altar

Creating an altar space in your home is a great way to honor this day! You can create an altar as a space to do one or all the craft projects above to bring a little extra magic to them. You can decorate your altar with your wild flowers, decorated eggs, planted seed cups, colorful candles, animal totems and crystals/gems associated with the season! An altar doesn’t have to be super elaborate. You can make an altar on a large tray or charger plate, on a shelf, or on a window sill. Choose your space, gather the items you want on your altar. Some ideas:

  • Spring Colored Candles: Blue (Calm, tranqulity, stability); Green (Renewal, Growth, fertility, prosperity, abundance) Pink (Love, Compassion, Hope) Yellow (Warmth, Energy, Positivity). Choose colors that correspond what you want to manifest this season.
  • Items for your “Plant Seeds Project”
  • Items for your “Egg Project”
  • Wild Flowers you gathered or Cut Flowers/Bouquet
  • Aquamarine, Moonstone, or Rose Quartz crystals
  • Bunny, Sheep/Ram, Bird, or Snake Pictures/toys/statues/etc
  • Anything else you may associate with spring

Once you have all your items gathered, smudge the space with your choice of sage, palo santo or herbal incense. Take some deep breaths and center yourself. Arrange your candles, flowers and other decorations. You can place your finished projects on your altar or actually do the projects on your altar. To do the projects on your altar: Light your candles and start your projects. Once completed, place them on your altar. Take a moment a sit in gratitude for this day, this season and all that it brings. Extinguish the candles and enjoy your day!

These are all super simple ways to bring a little magic of the season into your home and life this Spring Equinox. If you are craving more, like a full ritual or gathering, simply google “pagan celebrations near me” or “Ostara events near me”. Google is your friend…use it! Meetup.com is a great way to find pagan groups in your area. While living in So. California I went to a pagan meetup where I met a wonderful group people, who eventually formed a coven. I am still connected to some of them today, some 20-odd years later! I love festivals and gathering together with like minded people and celebrating the turning of the wheel!

I hope however you celebrate the Spring Equinox, you have a wonderful day full of hope, warmth and the joy of the season! Below you will find several links to items I’ve discussed in this blog. Merry Part Friends, until we meet again.
